Kia EV5

This is the brand new Kia EV5. The Kia EV5 is an electric SUV with which the Koreans want to reply to cars such as the Volkswagen ID4 and Toyota bZ4X. You should therefore see the Kia EV5 as the fully electric alternative to the Sportage.

It is certainly not the first time that the Kia EV5 has been reviewed digitally. In March this year, Kia already showed the Concept EV5. That was a very concrete preview of the car that plays the leading role in this article. It’s not even the first time you’ve seen the final production version on AutoWeek. We were able to show you that earlier in August after research in the database of the Chinese Ministry of Transport and Information Technology. Now, however, Kia itself has released the photos of the final EV5 and those plates go hand in hand with woolly descriptions of the design. Still, we don’t want to keep them from you.

Like the Concept EV5 before, the production version will make its public debut in China. This time during the Chengdu Motor Show. The Koreans report that China is the first country where the Kia EV5 will be launched this year. Is it coming to Europe too? Kia doesn’t say that, but we think so. In any case, Kia indicates that the car will not stay in China. Extensive technical data are not yet available. Kia will release it in October during the EV event called Kia EV Day.

We already know that the Kia EV5 is – unsurprisingly – considerably smaller than Kia’s electric flagship EV9. With a length of 4.62 meters, the EV5 is almost 40 centimeters shorter than its big brother. The SUV is 1.88 meters wide, 1.72 meters high and has 2.75 meters between the front and rear axles. The EV9 has a wheelbase of no less than 3.1 meters. The EV6 is also a size larger than the EV5. That EV – for sale in Europe for a while – is just under 4.7 meters long and has a wheelbase of 2.9 meters. However, the EV5 is considerably higher than the fairly low, stretched EV6. Like the EV6 and EV9, the Kia EV5 is on a variant of the EV-only E-GMP platform. We also know that the Kia EV5 – at least in China – will be marketed with a 218 hp and 310 Nm strong electric motor and that it will reach a top speed of 185 km / h. The car weight is 1,870 kg.

Kia EV5: interior.

It will come as no surprise that the EV5, like the EV9 and to a lesser extent the EV6, is drawn according to Kia’s latest Opposites United design language in which angular clean lines alternate with softer and rounded elements. The SUV has it Tigerface called family face and the Star Map dipped relief consisting of straight lines with some thickenings. We now see the interior of the Kia EV5 for the first time. We don’t know how big the screens are yet. Kia prefers to mention that there are 64 colors to choose from for the mood lighting. Just like in the EV9, we see a digital instrument panel and an infotainment screen that is housed in a wide panel. Between those two displays is a third, smaller one. In general, the dashboard resembles that of the EV9, but if you look closely you will see that almost every detail is really different.

We expect the Kia EV5 to be on the market in the Netherlands in 2024, but that is not yet official.
