All more than 3,700 cars are off the Fremantle Highway

The Fremantle Highway, the freighter full of cars that burned for days above Ameland, is empty. The cars have been removed and the ship must leave Eemshaven in just over a month.

It worked; the last of the more than 3,700 cars on the Fremantle Highway were taken off this week. “We have handed the ship back to the owner,” said a spokesperson for salvage company Boskalis. On August 10, an electric car caught fire while being unloaded. Furthermore, according to Boskalis, the clean-up went without incident. While the ship was being emptied, fire-fighting containers were ready for any cars that might still be on fire. Some of the cars were still in such good condition that they could be driven out of the ship under their own power.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. The fire on the ship, which was on the high seas north of Ameland, broke out in the night of Tuesday 25 to Wednesday 26 July. One person was killed and several people were injured. The crew consisted of 23 people, 22 of whom were of Indian nationality. The ship carried 3,784 cars, of which almost five hundred were electric. Multraship CEO Leendert Muller previously warned that the investigation into the cause could take a long time.

The ship, on which a fire broke out during the night of Tuesday 25 to Wednesday 26 July, is now empty in the Eemshaven and is expected to remain there for several weeks. In October the port will need the quay where the ship is moored again. It is still unclear what the owner’s plans are for the ship and when exactly it will be removed. “The ship must have left no later than October 14,” says a spokesperson for Groningen Seaports.
