You can do this with Google’s Gemini app on your iPhone

While we in Europe wait for Apple Intelligence for the iPhone, Google has secretly placed an app for Gemini in the App Store. You can do this with this AI.

Google Gemini on your iPhone

Only in April 2025 will we be able to start working with Apple Intelligence on the iPhone in Europe (although it will not yet work in Dutch). Meanwhile, other AI companies are not sitting still, as they all try to claim their own place on your iPhone. Google does this with a new iOS app for Gemini.

Unlike Apple Intelligence, Gemini doesn’t nestle into your iPhone for easy access. You will have to open the app first. Still, it’s worth it, because Gemini is pretty handy.

Text, audio and photo

You can ask Gemini questions based on text, your voice, or images, similar to other modern AI chatbots. You can use this option to identify something in a photo, to have written texts checked for you or to ask for advice on countless different topics.

It is useful that Gemini works with the other Google apps on your smartphone. For example, you can ask Gemini in a conversation about a route in Google Maps, after which you can open that route in the maps app. Please note that you have to pay for Gemini Advanced to work with Gmail, Drive and Documents.

Create images

With Gemini you can take pictures very well, with twice as high a resolution as the free version of ChatGPT. You just have to give Gemini a command such as ‘generate an image of a unicorn in the snow’. It is up to you to make your prompt (the assignment) as detailed as possible for the best results.

Getting started with YouTube

In the app’s settings you can also add YouTube to Gemini under ‘Extensions’. You can then use Gemini as a search engine for YouTube videos. Even more convenient, you can ask Gemini questions about a specific video, so you don’t have to watch the entire video. You can also ask Gemini to briefly summarize a video.

Chat with Gemini Live

With Gemini Live you can have a conversation just like you would with a human being. Currently, this function only works if your device is set to English. The Dutch version will be activated in a few weeks.

What is Gemini Advanced?

With a Google account you can get started with Gemini for free, but you will not be using the best version. If you want to get more out of this AI, you can consider paying for Gemini Advanced.

That is not cheap, because such a subscription costs 21.99 euros per month. Not only do you get access to the most advanced AI model, but also a larger context window (you can put more information into a question). You can also use Gemini in Gmail, Docs and other apps.
