Apple has introduced handy AI functions on the iPhone. But Apple’s AI is a bit worse than some Android devices.

Since iOS 18.4, Apple Intelligence has support for multiple languages ​​and it is now also possible to use the functions here. For that you of course have to set your iPhone in English.

Once you have done that, you can use the function well (English: Clean Up) to remove distracting objects in photos. You must first download this function by opening the photos app. Handy to know: have you brought in the function once? Then you can continue to use it, even if you put the iPhone back on Dutch.

The function works well, as long as you want to remove small objects or have an even background. If that is not the case, it quickly becomes a lot harder for Apple’s AI.

In the example below I removed myself. The AI ​​must come up with a piece of the background (and a part of the shark mouth) itself. Here you can see that the AI ​​of Apple still has some difficulty with that.

Android has a similar function on many devices. To see if there is a lot of difference between Apple’s AI and on Android we have edited the same photo again. For this we used one OnePlus 13 with OnePlus AI used.

As you can see, the result looks a lot better than with Apple’s AI. But if you look a little better, you also see that there are still some things wrong here and there. The teeth look a bit strange up close and the fence in the background has a weird spot. Yet we must admit that the AI ​​of Apple is currently a bit worse than that of some Android devices.

iPhone without Apple AI?

Apple AI is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Do you have an older iPhone? Then you have to do it without the AI ​​functions.

Yet there is a way to get AI functions on your older iPhone. That is possible with the Google Photos app. This contains a number of AI functions to edit your photos.
