The balance between work and spiritual duties was a major challenge for the monks of the Middle Ages. In order to ensure that their extensive prayer obligations do not endanger the monastery’s economic survival, the Cistercians in particular rely on lay brothers, so -called converts. By taking over a large part of the work in the fields and in the workshops, they made it possible for the choral to comply with their rule. In return, the conversers enjoyed the legal protection and the economic and social security by the order – and should also enjoy full participation in its treasures in heaven.
