Too bad: the release of the airtag 2 comes later than expected

For a long time it was expected that the release of the airtag 2 would be halfway through 2025, but now there are indications that it will be later.

Release airtag 2 later

X user Kosutami In February, Apple claimed to launch the next generation of airtag in May or June. That largely corresponded to the earlier message from Mark Gurman Van Bloomberg in November. But the end of June is approaching and there is still no new airtag. There is a new rumor about the release date of the airtag 2.

Probably in September

The good news is that iOS 18.6 is already compatible with the airtag 2. This means that the new generation of airtag does not necessarily need iOS 26, which would have been a pretty strict requirement. The ‘bad’ news is that it looks like Apple is now aiming for a release in the fall. Probably around the time of the iPhone event that takes place in September.

AirTag 2

You can expect this from the airtag 2

Apple has not officially announced anything yet, but there are plenty of rumors that indicate what we can expect:

  • Improved connectivity and reach: Thanks to the 2nd generation UWB chip, the airtag 2 will probably offer the same advanced tracking functions as the iPhone 15. The boundary for accurate search is thus increased from 15 meters to 60 meters.
  • Improved security and privacy: There are cases in which stalkers disable the speaker of the airtag. This makes it more difficult for victims to detect the device. After all, the warning noise used to locate hidden airtags cannot be activated. To tackle this, Apple is said to be better off the airtag 2 against manipulation.
  • Improved battery management: The new airtag probably also gives a warning for both a layer and a very low battery level. This makes it less likely that users accidentally empty the airtag. This may indicate a need for better battery management. Perhaps as a result of higher power consumption due to the renewed hardware.

In combination with the new fraud-resistant design, the second generation AirTag may also switch to a rechargeable battery, to replace the current CR2032 button cell. However, this has not yet been confirmed by several sources. When more will be known later about the airtag 2, you naturally read it immediately iPhoned!
