Sedona method: Negative emotions get rid of in 5 steps

We are happy to push negative feelings or try to distract ourselves from them. This is not healthy in the long run. The Sedona method can help.

Each: R different with its own feelings. Above all, dealing with negative feelings is difficult for many people: some tends to displace them or project them onto others. Others can be overrun by negative feelings. In the long run, however, an unhealthy handling of negative feelings can lead to (health) problems.

The Sedona method can help you learn to deal with your negative feelings in a healthy way and to overcome them. The method consists of five steps, which contains four questions and can generally be applied to any negative feeling.

The origin of the Sedona method

The Sedona method Lester Levenson, a physicist and entrepreneur who lived quite unhealthy. He suffered from different health problems. In addition, Levenson had two heart attacks and after the second, his doctors were: Inside that he couldn’t do much anymore and would soon die. Levenson wanted to live with the prospect of not living for long, but did not put up with and began to question his entire life so far.

He believed that the way he dealt with his thoughts, beliefs, behaviors and the resulting feelings had led to his illness. Studies show that the wrong handling of negative feelings, such as fear or sadness, can lead to an increased risk of illness.

As a result, Levenson developed a method that should help him deal with his feelings better. Incidentally, he lived for another 40 years in which he passed them on. The method later became a Sedona method that everyone can apply.

Everyone has to find out the effectiveness of the method for themselves, since there are hardly any scientific studies.

How does the Sedona method work?

The Sedona method should help you deal with your negative thoughts and ultimately let go.

There are five steps that you should follow:

  1. In the first step, you should consider the feeling that you want to let go. Name the feeling and remember a situation in which you felt it or it was created. Think about whether there is a feeling that you want to feel instead.
  2. Then go to the second step. Now you ask yourself the first Sedona question. It is “can I accept the feeling now?”. Definitely answer the question. If your answer is “yes”, you can go to the next step. If she is “no”, feel why you can’t accept the feeling. What prevents you from doing so? How could you manage to accept the feeling? Go to the next step when you have done that.
  3. In the third step you ask yourself the question: “Could I let go of this feeling? Even if it were only for a short moment?” Answer honestly here again. Regardless of whether you answer with “yes” or “no”, there is no right or wrong. Try to intuitively choose an answer.
  4. In the fourth step, you can then ask yourself the following question: “If I were able to let go of the feeling, I would do that?”. See honestly which answer feels right for you. If you answer the question with “No”, you can ask yourself an additional question if you want. This is “I would like to stick to the feeling or free myself from it?” If you have dealt with this question, go to the last step.
  5. The fifth step contains the last question. It reads “When would I be ready to let go of the feeling?”. Every answer is possible here and correct. For example, you could answer “now”, “soon” or “next Sunday”.

If you have walked through every five steps and asked yourself the questions mentioned, go back to the first step and repeat the process several times until you notice that you experience the feeling differently or have disappeared.

This is how the method works

The method helps you to get more in touch with yourself and your feelings. You will learn to understand your own feelings better and be more present.

The method also shows you that it is only possible to let go if you believe in it yourself. You can use the method in relation to feelings, people and behaviors.

Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work straight away. Give yourself the time and start best with “lighter feelings” to stay up and practice.

Important: However, you will probably not be able to solve all feelings or problems with the method: deep-seated trauma or other psychological problems can probably not be managed with the Sedona method. In such cases, it is advisable to take advantage of professional help.
