This car brand is stopping CarPlay in all cars (for this reason)

Do you think CarPlay is important in your current or next car? Then pay attention, because this car brand has announced that it will stop using CarPlay in all cars.

Car brand stops CarPlay

Do you regularly use CarPlay in your car? And do you think it is important that the operating system also works in your next car? In that case, it is better not to choose a car from General Motors (GM), because the car brand has announced that it will stop using CarPlay. GM electric cars have not been equipped with CarPlay for some time, but this will soon also apply to new petrol cars.

Mary Barra, the CEO of General Motors, announced this in an interview. According to Barra, CarPlay will first be phased out in electric cars, so the latest electric cars have no longer received support for the operating system since 2023. The car brand will later also stop using CarPlay on all other cars it produces, including petrol cars. This affects brands such as GMC, Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac, all of which fall under GM.

Focus on own software system

CarPlay will soon be missing from all new General Motors cars. Instead, GM focuses on developing its own software system. According to GM, this system works better in the car brand’s cars and it is easier to update this software. In the future, users will no longer have a choice between GM’s software system and CarPlay, because the latter will no longer be supported by the car brand.

It is a striking choice by GM, as the car brand has already received a lot of criticism for stopping CarPlay in electric cars. That choice meant bad news for many iPhone users, but GM did not listen to the criticism. Having their own software system has several advantages for car brands, giving them access to more information and data from drivers. Additionally, certain features may be put behind a paywall, while CarPlay remains free.

More about CarPlay

So be careful if you want to buy a car from brands such as GMC, Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac in the future, because these brands all fall under GM. All new cars will have to do without CarPlay in the future, so you will have to opt for GM’s own software system. Don’t you want that? In that case, it is better to choose a completely different car brand that does not stop with CarPlay.

If you now have a GM car, you don’t have to worry, because CarPlay continues to work in existing cars. Only the new models no longer support CarPlay. This is already the case with GM electric cars, all other cars will follow in the future. Are you curious which car brands are making the switch to CarPlay Ultra?
