1. Pairing
According to the latest rumors, Apple is working on an improved way to connect the AirTag 2 to your iPhone or iPad. This is already easy with the first generation of the device, your iPhone or iPad usually registers a new AirTag immediately when it is nearby. With the next generation of the AirTag, this will be even easier thanks to a new pairing process. It is not yet known how Apple makes pairing easier.
2. Accurate search
Precise searching is a useful feature of the AirTag, which gets even better with the AirTag 2. With the feature you can see the precise location of the device in the Find My app. There you can see how many meters away you are from the AirTag and in which direction the tracker is located. With the first generation of the AirTag, accurate searching works within a radius of fifteen meters, with the AirTag 2 the search area is expanded to sixty meters.
3. Learn more about the battery status
It is expected that Apple will leave the design of the AirTag virtually unchanged, so that the new generation of the device also works with a button cell battery. The AirTag now only reports when the battery is almost empty, but with the AirTag 2 you see more information about the battery status. The new version of the AirTag reportedly always shows the battery status in the Find My app, not just when the battery is low.
4. Improved tracking
With the AirTag 2, accurate searching has not only been improved, the tracking of the device also works better. With the first AirTag, it may sometimes happen that the location does not appear in the Find My app, especially if the tracker changes location. Apple solves this problem with the second generation of the AirTag, which must remain visible in the Find My app even when moving. This way you always know where the AirTag is located.
5. Busy places
The AirTag 2 is also reportedly easier to find in busy places. With the first generation of the AirTag, in some cases the location does not appear in a busy place. The tracker’s signal is disturbed by other devices and objects. This is no longer a problem with the new version of the AirTag, because Apple is working on a function that makes the location of the tracker more accurate in busy places.
Release of the AirTag 2
The AirTag 2 gets a number of important improvements under the hood. Few major changes are expected in the design, Apple may opt for a thinner casing that is slightly more compact. It is still unclear when exactly the AirTag will appear, because previous rumors predicted a release in 2025. There is little chance that Apple will release the AirTag 2 in December, so we won’t see the device until 2026.
Apple is expected to release the new generation of the AirTag before the summer holidays.
