Apple releases update for 2013 iPhone
You wouldn’t expect it, but Apple has released an update for the iPhone 5s, the iPhone 6 and the first iPad Air, among others. These devices have not been able to upgrade to the latest version of iOS for a long time and are still on iOS 12. The two updates that are ready are iOS 12.5.8 and iPadOS 12.5.8.
The update includes a few important features. This update extends the certificate required for functions such as iMessage, FaceTime and activating your device. Before the update, this certificate expired on January 2027. By updating this certificate, these devices will continue to work after January 2027.
These are all devices that have received an update:
- iPhone 5s;
- iPhone 6;
- iPhone 6 Plus;
- iPad Air;
- iPad mini 2;
- iPad mini 3;
- iPod touch (6th generation).
So are you still using one of these devices? Then you really need to update them. At least before January 2027, otherwise you won’t be able to use it after that. In addition, it is always useful to update on time, so that any bug fixes are also installed. The last update for these iPhones and iPads dates back to January 23, 2023.
iPhone 5s: first iPhone with Touch ID
Also nice to know: the iPhone 5s was officially released in the Netherlands on October 25, 2013. From that day on, it was in stores and could be ordered via the Apple Store, at the same time as the colorful iPhone 5c.
What made the 5s extra special was the introduction of Touch ID. For the first time, you could unlock your iPhone with your fingerprint. In addition, the device received a more luxurious appearance with three stylish colors to choose from: silver, gold and space gray.
