AirTag 2 is much more magnetic than AirTag 1 (and here’s why)

The original AirTag is somewhat magnetic, but with the AirTag 2 the magnetic force is a lot stronger – here’s what’s going on.

AirTag 2 is much more magnetic than AirTag 1

The AirTag 2 has a number of improvements compared to the first version. For example, it has a new processor and the new version has a much greater range for ‘Precise Search’. There is also a new speaker that plays sound up to 50 percent louder, so it can be heard twice as far away. In addition, the new AirTag also appears to be a lot more magnetic than its predecessor.

If you ‘stick’ the new AirTag to a metal surface, it will stay in place very well. If you do this with the first version AirTag, you will feel that it is magnetic, but not magnetic enough to stay put. Although you can think of some useful applications for that extra magnetic force, it is in all likelihood nothing more than a side benefit.

This is why

It seems that it is only a logical consequence of the larger speaker in the new AirTag. All speakers are magnetic and the larger the speaker, the stronger the magnetic force. In the image below you can clearly see how much larger the new speaker is. It is therefore not surprising that the AirTag 2 is a lot more magnetic than the first version.

So it is probably not an intentionally intended new feature, but you can of course use it. For example, you could ‘stick’ an AirTag 2 in your car on a metal plate. But even if you use a metal (tool) case, you can more easily hide the new AirTag in a fixed place in the case.

We do not recommend ‘sticking’ the new AirTag on your bicycle frame or on the outside under your car. It will probably stay there for a while, but there is also a significant risk of it falling off. After all, it is not MagSafe.
