If you travel a lot by car, navigation applications are indispensable these days. With apps like Apple Maps and Google Maps you can (usually) arrive at your destination without any problems. These navigation services show which exit to take, where construction work is taking place and what the speed limit is on each road. Temporary speed cameras are missing in these applications, to see them you have to use special services such as Flitsmeister.

Have you installed Flitsmeister on your smartphone? And do you no longer go on the road without the navigation service to avoid traffic fines? It’s better not to do that, because the opposite turns out to be true. According to research among a thousand motorists Independent shows that drivers who use apps such as Flitsmeister receive traffic fines more often. This is striking, because the navigation service is intended to avoid such fines.

More traffic fines

The Independer survey shows that only motorists without an application such as Flitsmeister 19 percent received a traffic fine in the past year. This percentage is much higher among motorists who do use a speed camera app. This group has no fewer than 41 percent received a traffic fine last year. Drivers with apps such as Flitsmeister are therefore twice as likely to receive a traffic fine compared to motorists who do not use these applications.

Flitsmeister warns road users about the majority of speed cameras, but this does not result in fewer traffic fines. This has several causes, for example not all traffic controls are included in applications such as Flitsmeister. Motorists are probably less likely to comply with traffic rules if they do not receive a warning from similar apps such as Flitsmeister. They are then flashed by a traffic camera that is not included in the navigation service.

Longer on the road

According to Independer, motorists who use applications such as Flitsmeister are also on the road more often. This is where the second cause lies, because a longer travel time also means a greater chance of a traffic fine. These fines are relatively high in the Netherlands, for example you pay 440 euros for using a telephone behind the wheel. Driving through a red light costs you 310 euros, for a parking violation it is 130 euros. These amounts do not include administration costs, which will therefore be added.

In any case, Independer’s research makes it clear that applications such as Flitsmeister do not ensure that you receive fewer traffic fines. The advice remains, of course, to always adhere to the traffic rules, even if there is no speed camera or traffic control. This not only keeps traffic safe, but also prevents you from having to pay a high amount of money on a traffic fine. Would you like to know more about navigation services such as Flitsmeister?
