With the Apple Watch you can easily personalize your workouts so that they perfectly fit your fitness goals. Whether you want to set intervals with a warm-up and cool-down, or add specific goals for time, distance and calorie burn: you can adjust everything in just a few steps via the Workout app.
For runners, Apple Watch offers additional benefits with advanced running technique data, such as vertical oscillation, ground contact time and stride length, that you can view and analyze in real time. This function helps you run more efficiently and prevent injuries by immediately optimizing your running form.
Customize Apple Watch workouts
Once you’ve chosen a workout, you can immediately customize it thanks to the simple interface. In every corner of your screen you will find a shortcut that provides direct access to popular functions:
- Workout view (top left): Choose the desired screens with information that you see during exercise
- Goals (top right): Choose your desired goals that you want to achieve with this sporting activity, for example desired distance, calorie burn, etc.
- Music (bottom left): Manage media autoplay
- Notifications (bottom right): Set notifications for heart rate, distance traveled, split times, goals, etc

Create your own workouts
By default, you can perform a workout based on time, distance, calories burned or in open mode. In open mode, you decide during the workout how long it lasts and what distance you cover by manually stopping it. It is also possible to put together your own workouts. Unfortunately, you have to do all of this on the small screen of the Apple Watch, but it is a valuable addition.
- Open the Workout application
- Go to a desired workout
- Tap the timer clock at the top right
- Then choose ‘Custom’

Adjust your training and recovery intervals to your way of training. For example, you can run for 2 minutes and then walk for 1 minute. You can optionally add a warm-up and cool-down. Decide immediately whether you want to receive notifications about pace, heart rate, rhythm and power.

- Tap the overlapping symbols at the top left
- Add the desired measurements
- Tap the pencil icon to change it

While performing a running workout, you can turn the Digital Crown to switch between the different statistics. This way you can immediately view the Running Technique data and Running Power.
