New DeLorean on the way

DeLorean Motor Company will soon finally release a spiritual successor to the DMC-12. Italdesign has put the design on paper and now shares the first teaser photo.

The wildest rumors about a new DeLorean have been circulating for years. The last time we heard anything concrete was about a year ago. Then there was still a plan at DMC to rebuild the DMC-12 with leftover parts from the 80s. The tentative hope was that production could start in 2021. Now it looks like a completely new retro DeLorean is on the way. Italdesign shares a shadowy image of a car with gull-wing doors and DMC on the nose.

The acclaimed Italian design house shares the image on the 40th anniversary of the first-built DMC-12. “What better way to celebrate an icon of the automotive industry than with a glimpse of the (near) future. We’ll keep you posted,” said Italdesign. Unfortunately, we are still completely in the dark about the new DeLorean. Last year, DMC’s vice president James Espey spoke about the DMC-12s that could still be built with original parts and that a ‘384 hp engine’ would be added. Who knows, the latter also applies to the brand new DeLorean.

The fact that it will be a design by Italdesign is in itself easy to explain. After all, the DMC-12 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who also founded Italdesign. The teaser photo also includes the official logos of DMC, so this is not about a nice study model on your own initiative, but about the real work. Now hope the future comes soon!
