Do you want to watch your calories? After all, it is the best way to lose weight. These calorie counter apps will help you not to go over the limit.
Best calorie counter apps for iOS
If you want to lose weight, there are different methods. The most obvious is keeping track of your calories. The idea is simple: if you burn more calories every day than you take in, you will lose weight. But knowing how much you have already received is impossible by heart. Fortunately, there are several apps in the App Store that help you keep track of this.
The vast majority of apps to track your calories are free. This makes it an accessible way to lose weight. It is striking that you can often take out premium subscriptions as an in-app purchase. For example, these offer additional features or personalized diet plans and recipes.
Please note: sticking to a specific number of calories to lose weight works, but is not necessarily healthy. It is also possible to stay below your limit with purely unhealthy food. To be healthy, you also need to eat healthy food. You also need calories to function, so don’t starve yourself.
1. Our Favorite Calorie Counter App: Lifesum
Lifesum is clearly the most beautiful calorie counter in the App Store and also very useful. When you start the app, you indicate whether you want to be healthier, lose weight or gain weight. If you indicate that you want to lose weight, enter a target weight and how quickly you want to achieve it.
The app itself recommends losing half a kilo per week. Lifesum can be used entirely in Dutch and also has recipes, a pedometer and the option to add friends. Do you eat something from a package? Simply scan the barcode to add its nutritional values to your overview.
But the app goes one step further. Drinking enough water is an important part of healthy living. Lifesum points this out to you by regularly sending reminders if necessary.
Unfortunately, the very best features are behind a paywall. These are, for example, a diet that you can follow that is specialized for you and even more specific information about foods. In addition, in the paid version, you sync the app with fitness apps such as FitBit and RunKeeper to also keep track of your calories burned. Such a subscription will cost you 9.99 euros per month.
2. MyFitnessPal
After starting up and logging in, MyFitnessPal immediately asks what your goal is: lose weight, maintain your weight or gain weight. Then you enter information such as your height, current weight and your target weight. This is necessary to calculate your calorie goal. You add food by choosing the type of meal and adding foods.
Conveniently, you can scan barcodes of Dutch products, indicate the portion and the app uses that data to calculate how many calories that is. The app also has the ability to count your steps. It is also nice that this calorie counter can be used completely in Dutch.
3. Calorie Counter by FatSecret
This app does not have the many possibilities, but it is simple and clear. There is a large database of food where you can look up your ingredients. This way you can easily keep track of what you have eaten. The application keeps clear charts and has a recipe corner. The app can also be used completely in Dutch. Do you want a simple no frills calorie counter? Then you’ve come to the right place at FatSecret.
4. Calorie and Nutrition Tracker (Food)
This app, which is also simply called Food, is a great option to gain more insight into your calorie intake. It’s not the prettiest app, but it does what it’s supposed to do. There are many products in the database, but you can just as easily use the barcode scanner. The great thing about this app is that in addition to calories, it is also very clear about the proportions of what you have put in your mouth, such as carbohydrates and proteins.
5. Lose It!
Also Lose It! gives you a plan after filling in your age, height, weight and target weight. Use a slider to indicate whether you want to achieve this weight faster or slower. Then the app shows the date on which you reach the weight if you stick to the number of calories. You enter your dish or ingredients by searching in the database, or by scanning barcodes. It can also be used with your Apple Watch and iPad.
The calories are then placed on a daily or weekly chart. You can connect with your friends via Facebook to stay motivated. Unfortunately, the app can only be used in English, although there are Dutch food names in the database. Lose It! is a complete calorie counter app, but the options are limited until you subscribe.
Leave aside: Yazio
A nice app with a lot of possibilities: at first glance Yazio is a nice calorie counter. If you go a little deeper into the options, however, Yazio becomes less and less clear. Good: if you start to understand the complete interface a bit, you will get a nice picture of your food consumption in a day. There is a very good chance that you have already dropped out.
Entering your calories, for example, is a bit difficult and it is not possible to log in with Facebook. The aforementioned counters do offer that option, just like they give more options in their free version. At Yazio almost everything is paid. The free version only offers the extended calorie counter. If you want to use all functions, you have to pay. If you can live with those drawbacks, you can of course download it. However, know that there are better options (at least as far as free apps go).
Water Reminder
A big part of losing weight and your health is drinking enough water. Do you often forget that or do you find it difficult to keep up? With the Water Reminder app you get reminders to keep your hydration up. You set how many reminders you want to receive. You can also link the app to the Health app of your iPhone.
