An iPhone or iPad is mainly good for entertainment, but can also be used to teach children. These are the best education apps for young kids.
Best Education Apps for Kids
There are countless apps in the App Store that claim to help with your children’s education. We dived into the offer and picked out some gems. Note that some of these apps do ask for money if you want to use all the content. We clearly state this below. In any case, you can download and try all these apps for free.
1. Tiny Tap
TinyTap contains educational games made by teachers. These games have all kinds of topics. For example ‘Learning letters with Sinterklaas’, ‘De Lente’ and ‘Recognizing musical instruments’. When starting the app, you can indicate that you are a parent or teacher and indicate the age of your child.
The app is divided into free and paid games. A subscription is required for the paid games. Fortunately, there are plenty of free educational games to play. The app can be downloaded from the App Store via the link below.
2. EASY peasy: English for kids
Is it time for English? Then this app offers a solution. When you start the app, you immediately indicate the current level of the child. Then you enter how many words you want to learn per day: 5, 10 or 15. Then you choose a set of words and get started. It is a beautiful app that uses flash cards to learn words.
The app is free, but you can also buy a premium version. This paid version is free to try for seven days and includes the ability to take unlimited lessons, work offline and add multiple users.
3. Teach children Dutch
With this app, children learn Dutch words through games. In the main screen you choose a category and type of game. You can choose between pronouncing an object after viewing a picture, memory, a puzzle or a quiz. It’s all about matching the right word to the picture. Unfortunately, only animals and colors are free themes. Other themes, such as vehicles, clothes or numbers are paid.
To unlock these themes, you pay 5.49 euros once. If you buy this pro version, the app also gives test results, so you can see whether your child is improving.
4. Teach Me Words
Teach Me Words is a fun app to teach the youngest words. This can be done in two ways. First, by pronouncing what is on a picture. For example, you will see a picture of a pig. Tapping on the pig makes a grunt and a voice says it’s a pig. You can also do ‘guess the picture’. Then, for example, the voice asks ‘where is the bear’ and the child has to choose the bear from four pictures.
In the free version you only get the category ‘animals’ for free. If you want to use all other categories, you pay 3.49 euros once. For that you get pictures of vehicles, music, fruit, clothes, colors and home. In any case, you can try the app for free and check it out in the App Store via the link below.
5. The world of Miffy
The world of Miffy can be seen as an interactive storybook. The app gives you and your child a glimpse into the life of the famous bunny. It is nice that you come across all kinds of recognizable situations for children. Think, for example, of brushing your teeth or choosing clothes. By having Miffy do these activities, children learn that this is normal.
It’s nice that The world of Miffy has been designed as a very soothing app. This makes the app also suitable for use just before going to sleep. The app is of course really intended for the very young.
6. Math Table Game
This is a simple (and not very pretty), but effective app. It helps children to learn their times tables. Above a nice picture is a sum and below that are four possible answers. Children must choose the correct answer. The app has the tables from 1 to 6 for free. Payment is made for the tables from 7 to 12. Fortunately, that only costs 1.09 euros.
7. Woezel & Pip – In the Magic Garden
In this app especially for children from 2 to 6 years old, your child can visit Woezel & Pip in the Tovertuin. In this interactive world, children can play five different educational games. Because there is no talking and nothing is written, children have to discover for themselves how a game works.
Children can choose from level 1, 2 or 3 for each game. When they are a bit older, for example, they can choose a more difficult level. By swiping you move through the Magic Garden and the different games can be clicked on. All games are of course drawn in the same cheerful style as the two dog friends.
8. Lola’s Learning World
The extensive math game with dozens of games offers hours of fun for your child. The app was created in collaboration with education experts for children between the ages of 3 and 5. In this way children are well prepared just before they go to primary school for the math assignments they can expect there.
By giving a correct answer to a rain question, you will be presented with an even more challenging sum. Children learn to measure, discover patterns, colours, count shapes and calculate. You can easily keep track of your child’s progress in the progress tracker.
