The average national suggested retail price for diesel is at an all-time high. A new record was reached for petrol five days ago.
The average national suggested retail price for a liter of diesel is now €1,618, higher than ever before. Petrol also recently hit a record price: €1.985 per litre, although at the time of writing that has fallen back to €1.982. This is evident from data from UnitedConsumers, which has been tracking prices at the pump for 20 years. The LPG price is also at a record high, because a liter now costs just over €1 per litre.
Previously, the high prices could largely be explained on the basis of scarcity, but that no longer plays such a major role in rapidly rising prices as in the spring. UnitedConsumers director Paul van Selms says he cannot explain this rapid rise in prices. “It must be a question of supply and demand. The oil-producing countries know how to keep prices high anyway.” The rise in oil prices started as a result of the rapid recovery of the economy after the initial blow of the corona crisis.
Incidentally, earlier this year there were places where you had to pay more than €2 per liter of petrol. That will no doubt be the case again. However, there are large local differences in the liter price of fuel, so it is always advisable to check where you are relatively cheap. Along the highway (especially in the evening and at night) you are a thief of your own wallet.
