Activate a special keyboard to illustrate and animate your conversations using kaomoji, those emojis made using punctuation marks and special characters.
Illustrate your mood of the moment or set the tone for a conversation using emojis, everyone knows. iOS comes by default with a keyboard entirely dedicated to these emoticons which sometimes represent characters, sometimes objects and which are frequently used to convey an emotion or quite simply to respond with a reaction without writing a message. But did you know that iOS also allows the use of kaomoji?
If you don’t know what these are yet, kaomoji are very popular emoticons used in Japan and made using punctuation marks and special characters (kaomoji literally means “face in characters”). Among the most encountered on the web, you may have already seen some of these kaomoji:
¯ _ (ツ) _ / ¯, (-_-), (T_T), (o_O), (-_-) zzZ, (> _ <) or even ^^
On iOS, many third-party applications that can be downloaded from the App Store, more or less successful, allow you to use them directly from the iOS keyboard. But it is also possible to use a native iOS keyboard that integrates them. Find out how to activate kaomoji on your iPhone keyboard.

1. Open Settings
Go to iOS Settings. Then enter the General menu, and access the Keyboard settings then go to the Keyboards section.

2. Add a keyboard
Now tap Add keyboard, and find Japanese keyboard. Then select the Romaji keyboard. Once the Japanese-Romaji keyboard is activated, close Settings and open an app for entering text, such as the Messages app.

3. Use the Romaji keyboard
To switch from a French keyboard that you use by default to Kaomoji, press the world map icon to access the Japanese keyboard, and then press the 123 key.
To the left of the second to last row of the keyboard, press the ^ _ ^ key. Kaomoji are displayed at the top of the keyboard above the first line of letters. Unfold it fully by pressing the small arrow displayed on the right. You can now liven up your online conversations using kaomoji.

4. Use a dedicated keyboard
Rather than using the Japanese keyboard, which requires several actions to access the kaomoji, it is possible to download an application dedicated to these somewhat special emoticons on the App Store. Our choice fell on Kaomoji – facemojis keyboard, a free application, without in-app purchase, which does not collect any data and which integrates directly into the iOS keyboard as a secondary keyboard.

Once the app is installed on your iPhone, you need to manually activate the keyboard to use it. To do this, go to Settings> General> Keyboard> Keyboards> Add keyboard.
You should find the Kaomoji keyboard there. You can if you wish to remove the Japanese keyboard previously configured.
