Like many other brands, Audi is also working on a series of new electric models. One of these is the Q6 e-tron, an electric SUV that has now surfaced new spy photos. In the same way that the Audi E-tron GT is a technical brother of the Porsche Taycan, the Q6 e-tron will be a blood relative of the electric Porsche Macan, which has yet to be revealed.
In recent years, Porsche and Audi have collaborated on the development of the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), a modular platform specifically intended for electric cars. In short, the PPE platform is the MEB platform intended for larger and more expensive models, although it is of a completely different technical level. More on that later. The PPE platform will debut at Audi at the end of 2022 under a brand new SUV. That’s the Audi Q6 e-tron you see in these spy photos.
Audi released a large chunk of information about the PPE base in April this year, when it presented the A6 e-tron Concept. With that study model, Audi looked ahead to an electric A6 or A7-like that should appear in a few years. The A6 e-tron Concept was already on the PPE base. The Q6 e-tron to be revealed at the end of next year is the first Audi to use that platform. The PPE platform has 800-volt on-board voltage, which enables high payloads. According to Audi, the PPE base can handle charging capacities of up to 270 kW.
Don’t be surprised if the motor specifications of the A6 e-tron Concept can also be partly translated to the Q6 e-tron. The A6 e-tron Concept had two electric motors that together sent 476 hp and 800 Nm of torque to all four wheels. The 100 kWh battery of that concept car was good for a range of up to 700 kilometers. Undoubtedly, both the production version of the A6 e-tron and the final Q6 e-tron will also come on the market with milder powertrains, although Audi told AutoWeek about the former model that it is also considering an extra fierce RS version.
The Audi Q6 e-tron gets a Porsche as a brother. The electric Porsche Macan that is scheduled for 2023 and will be run alongside the current Macan generation for a short time, will be built on the same technical basis. So expect that the Q6 e-tron you see in these photos will be a Macan-sized car, just like the Q5. Indeed, that means that it will be one step below the current E-tron SUV, which will have to last until about 2025. At least in terms of size; Audi may put the Q6 e-tron on the market as a sportier model.
