The roll-out of OVpay, the successor to the OV chip card, will start in 2022. You will be able to check in and out with a physical card, your telephone or debit card. The new card will be tested in the coming months together with the NS and should be published in the autumn.
OVpay
The OV-chipkaart can already start counting down to his retirement, because this year OV-pay comes with a new solution. OVpay will allow travelers to check in and out on public transport in a much more flexible way, Bas van Weele, program director at OV-Pay, said in a podcast at BNR.
Van Weele states that not only will there be a new public transport chip card, but that travelers can also directly use a debit or credit card to check in and out. In addition, the service also works in combination with a smartphone app. OV-pay still has to find a solution together with the banking sector, so that your debit card only needs to be identified.
More choice for travelers
The great strength of these three methods is that the choice lies with the traveler himself, but paying for public transport also sees other advantages. “You no longer need a physical card. That also makes a huge difference in distribution and production costs,” says van Weele.
OV-pay says that the new card is now being tested in collaboration with the NS. “We hope to be able to make the new OV chip card available at the end of the third, early fourth quarter, so at the earliest in October,” says Bas van Weele.
