‘Snapdragon Wear 5100 leaked: faster watches that last longer’

Information has leaked about a new Qualcomm chipset targeting smartwatches. The Snapdragon Wear 5100 gets a more powerful processor and, thanks to its coprocessor, also a new sleep mode for apps.

Snapdragon Wear 5100

Now that Qualcomm told us all about its high-end chipset for smartphones at the end of last year, it will soon be time for a new processor aimed at smart watches. The Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 5100 will work with ARM Cortex-A53 cores operating at up to 1.7Hz, which is leaking Win future† It is made according to a modern 4 nm baking process.

Besides the processor, we know that it will get a 700MHz Adreno 702 GPU for the graphics. The Snapdragon 5100 is also assisted by 4 GB of RAM and there is support for the fast LPDDR4X work memory. The chipset can work on both Android and Wear OS, and there’s even support for cameras on your watch. it concerns a maximum of two lenses, good for 13 MP and 16 MP.

More economical with the battery

A major concern for Wear OS watches is energy consumption, as the smartwatches often have to be recharged quickly. The Snapdragon Wear 5100 comes in a variant that introduces a special sleep mode. You remain connected to your apps, but your watch consumes significantly less, according to the rumours.

The Snapdragon Wear 5100 closes the four processor cores in that mode and then switches to the coprocessor in the chip. Qualcomm uses a QCC5100 processor made using a 22nm firing process. The clock speed of the coprocessor is much lower, but it does offer support for Bluetooth and WiFi so that you stay connected with your apps. When you use your watch effectively, the main processor kicks in again.

Better vibration and heart rate measurement

The Snapdragon Wear 5100 should not only be faster and more economical than its predecessors, but it comes with even more improvements. First, better vibrators are possible for haptic feedback when you get notifications.

The ARM Ethos Machine Learning Core should also ensure that your watch can better detect sports activities, see variations in your heart rate or detect a fall. It is still unclear when the Snapdragon Wear 5100 will hit the market and which watch will use it first.
