Google wants to combat stalking with Bluetooth tag tracker

It is becoming more and more popular for companies to make trackers. Think, for example, of Tile, but also of Apple’s AirTag. The only downside is that you have to download separate apps from Tile and Apple to know if you’re a victim of tracking. Google wants to change that.

New in Google Play Services

In a new update to Google Play Services (22.12.13, courtesy of 9to5Google) references have been found to an unknown device signal, intended to detect unknown tags traveling after you. It is expected that this function will soon be available within the settings menu under Safety and Emergencies.

There are references in the app to ATag, Tile tag and Finder Tag, with ATag probably referring to Apple’s AirTag. The technology therefore seems to have to be set up specifically per type of tag, so if all kinds of other companies also come up with their own tags, Google has work to do. At the same time, it could greatly improve the security of Android users. Imagine someone in the pub tosses a tag in your bag and follows you home that way, you should be pointed out by this new gadget from Google and hopefully be able to find the tracker before you get home .
