Unfortunately: New design from TVOS 26 only comes to this Apple TV

The renewed TVOS 26 with the Liquid Glass design unfortunately only comes to two versions of the Apple TV-we tell you which they are.

New Design TVOS not for all Apple TVs

Apple announced TVOS 26 during De Keynote on Monday 9 June. Just like iOS 26, this new version of TVOS gets the Liquid Glass design, with transparent and reflective parts. This new design does not come to all Apple TVs, but only to two specific versions. This is the Apple TV 4K of the second and third generation. Older Apple TVs are therefore outside the boat.

Not the full upgrades of TVOS 26

TVOS 26 offers a number of interesting new functions. There are user profiles from which you can choose, automatic registrations for third-party apps, permanent AirPlay speaker connections, new screensavers and you can use your iPhone as a microphone in the Karaokem mode of Apple Music.

But the biggest renewal of TVOS is it Liquid Glass-Design, which will be found on all Apple devices in one form or another, including the Mac. The menus and buttons are transparent and shiny, with more interactive elements. But Liquid Glass does not look as futuristic as iOS 7 in 2013. It does not seem so much a design for the future, but a design for the present. So the question is how innovative the design will look like in the near future.

TVOS 26 runs on many Apple TVs. The developer beta appears to be compatible with all HD or 4K Apple TVs. The bad news is that the Apple TV HD from 2015 and the Apple TV 4K of the first generation (2017) do not get the full upgrades of TVOS 26. Liquid Glass is only available on the 2nd generation Apple TV 4K from 2021 and the 3rd generation Apple TV 4K From 2022.
