Thanks to reliable rumors, it has been known for a while that the new iPhone 14 Pro will have an always-on display. Now we also know how Apple is likely to shape this.
iPhone 14 Pro with always-on
An always-on display is a screen that is always on. You’ll then see information continuously, without the need to wake the iPhone from sleep by tapping the screen.
The iPhone 14 Pro has yet to appear, but we already know what is likely to be possible with the always-on screen. According to Apple insider Mark Gurman of Bloomberg does the always-on screen support iOS 16’s new lock screen widgets.
“Like the Apple Watch, the iPhone 14 Pro can display widgets that show weather, calendars, activities and other data while the screen is on at a low brightness and frame rate,” Gurman wrote. “And there will be a setting that will prevent sensitive data from appearing on the lock screen, just like the Apple Watch.”
Widgets in iOS 16
At the beginning of June, Apple presented the innovations of iOS 16, which is expected to be installed for everyone in September. So one of the big changes is the widgets that you place on the lock screen. You can see what the widgets look like in the screenshot below. In addition to the widgets, it is expected that the screen will always display the time, date and number of notifications.
The widgets look remarkably simple and minimalistic: they are small and white. Ideal for a screen that is always on, as they consume relatively little energy. That is why it was obvious that Apple would also use the new widgets for the always-on screen of the iPhone 14 Pro.
To enable the always-on functionality, the iPhone 14 Pro gets an improved screen. This screen reduces the refresh rate to 1 Hz. This is one image per second. This way the screen can always be on, without using too much battery. Incidentally, the Apple Watch already has such an always-on screen, where the display also only refreshes once per second in sleep mode.
