Alpine A110 R

Alpine introduces a new sporty top version of the A110. Called the A110 R, the French fun machine is lighter, faster and more extreme in every way than any other version of the retro-designed sports coupe.

Alpine already supplies the A110 in three flavors and in two power variants. The basic version, simply called A110, has a 252 hp, blown 1.8, while the GT and S versions have screwed-up versions of the same four-cylinder up to 300 hp behind the front seats. This A110 R surpasses those GT and S versions in almost every way, but not in one way. It has the same 300 hp and 340 Nm power plant that sends its power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission.

How does the A110 R differ from the existing versions? Mainly with its weight and packaging. At 1,082 kilos, the Alpine A110 R weighs 34 kilos less than the A110 S. Parts such as the front cover, the wheels and the hood are made of carbon fiber to save weight. Even the rear window has been replaced with a carbon fiber panel. It is therefore difficult to see through it.

In addition, the A110 R is overloaded with spoilers, rims and lips that increase the downforce, but also reduce air resistance. We see a rear spoiler that is attached to the car with a so-called gooseneck, just like the one on cars such as a 911 GT3 RS. The A110 R has a flat bottom and a heavy diffuser at the bottom of the rear. All the wing work gives the Alpine A110 R up to 29 kilos of extra downward pressure on the rear. It even gets movable flaps in the front that give up to 14 kilos of downward pressure on the front of the car. A good set of side skirts finishes the flanks of the A110 R, but of course they also serve an aerodynamic purpose. The wheels – front and rear designed differently – are made entirely of carbon fiber. It is surrounded by Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 semi-slicks and the wheels contain extra powerful braking from Brembo.

Have the ladies and gentlemen in Dieppe been doing anything else? Secure. The Alpine A110 R has a more tightly tuned chassis and a new exhaust system with double tailpipes. The top version also benefits from the arrival of new stabilizer bars that make the car 10 percent stiffer at the front and 25 percent at the rear. The interior has also been modified. In it you will not only find special carbon bucket seats with six-point seat belts, but also pull loops instead of conventional handles in the door panels. Almost the entire workplace is covered with microfibre.

All technical adjustments give the A110 R decent performance. The topper of the A110 range shoots from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. The A110 S needs 4.2 seconds for the same sprint. The top speed of the A110 R is 285 km/h. We do not yet have a Dutch price.
