Apple’s latest tablet comes in all kinds of nicer colors, but a few strange choices were made during development. In a teardown of the iPad 2022 you can now see why the tablet has not received support for the Apple Pencil 2.
iPad 2022: no Apple Pencil 2 support (but why?)
The iPad 2022 is Apple’s newest tablet. The tenth-generation iPad has a slightly larger 10.5-inch display with USB-C support. The design is also different and is very similar to that of the iPad Air 2022. The tablet has an A14 Bionic chip under the hood and (on models with mobile internet) support for 5G.
The iPad 2022 also has support for the Apple Pencil. Surprisingly, that’s not the Apple Pencil 2. The iPad 10 can only work with the first-generation Apple Pencil.
For this purpose, Apple now supplies a conversion piece from lightning to USB-C with the Pencil 1. You can then charge it by plugging the Pencil into the lightning port of the iPad. If you already have a 1st generation Apple Pencil, you have to buy a separate attachment for 10 euros.
It is strange that Apple has not opted for the Apple Pencil 2. You charge it by sticking it magnetically to the side of the tablet. Recent versions of the iPad mini (6th generation), iPad Air (4th generation and later), and iPad Pro (3rd generation and later) do have this option.
There’s apparently something to why Apple didn’t give the iPad 2022 the necessary hardware for the Apple Pencil 2. The iPad 2022 looks like two drops of water on the iPad Air 2022 and that tablet does have the function.
Selfie camera takes the place of Apple Pencil 2
However, a few things are different. With the iPad 2020, the selfie camera is now located where you click the Apple Pencil 2 to charge on the iPad Air. Apple probably had to choose between support for the Apple Pencil 2 and the new location of the selfie camera on the iPad 2022.
With the camera in this new spot, there simply wasn’t enough space to also place the Apple Pencil 2’s magnets. You can see exactly what’s going on in iFixit’s iPad 10 teardown below.
