The Dutch are increasingly investing in making the exterior of their home smarter. To date, €607 million has been spent on smart roller shutters/curtains, €560 million on smart blinds and €236 million on smart garage doors.

The fifth edition of the Smart Home Monitor, a large-scale survey by Multiscope among more than 5,200 Dutch people, shows that the Dutch spent a total of € 1.4 billion on the production category smart window coverings and garage doors. This was still € 698 million a year ago. In percentage terms, the growth is strongest for sun protection (294%), followed by garage doors (105%) and roller shutters/curtains (38%). The average expenditure is highest for sun blinds (€2,125), followed by roller shutters/curtains (€1,558) and garage doors (€1,186).

Only small part of houses
Despite the high turnover in this product category, only a small proportion of houses are equipped with smart window coverings or garage doors. For smart roller shutters/curtains this is 5%, for blinds 3% and for garage doors also 3%. Each subcategory has increased by 2% in the past year.

Doubling possible
One in twenty consumers says they want to purchase smart roller shutters/curtains within the next year. The purchase intention of sun protection is also 5%. The investment intention in smart garage doors is slightly lower (3%). It is striking that future buyers of smart blinds want to spend considerably less (€ 1,017) than the current average expenditure of € 2,125.

The results in this post come from the fifth edition of the Smart Home Monitor, a large-scale study into the status of domotics in the Netherlands. The survey surveyed 5,262 respondents aged 18 and over, representing the Dutch population.
