Adjust iPad/iPhone screen brightness

Do you want more or less light to be able to read everything properly on the iPad/iPhone? Adjust the brightness of the screen.

In bright sunlight, the display should be brighter than in a candle-lit room. Adjust the brightness of the iPad/iPhone screen according to your needs.

  • Tap on Institutions.
  • From iOS14/iPadOS 14, tap Screen and brightness. In iOS 13/iPadOS 13, tap Display and brightness.
  • Drag the knob under Brightness to the left (darker) or right (brighter) to adjust the brightness.

The brightness can also be quickly adjusted via the Control Panel:

  • Move your finger up from the bottom edge of the screen. On iPhone X or later, swipe the screen down from the top right.
  • The Control Panel appears. In the Control Panel is a rectangle with a sun. Swipe on this to adjust the brightness.
  • Press the Home button to close the menu or swipe the screen from bottom to top (iPhone X or later).

The iPad/iPhone can react to the ambient light and then make the screen brighter or less bright. Set this up in the following way:

  • Tap on Institutions.
  • Tap on Accessibility.
  • Tap on Display and text size.
  • Make sure the slider behind ‘Automatically adjust’ is green. Isn’t this the case? Then tap it.
