In China, Airdrop on your iPhone gets a function. And Apple should actually make this new option available on every iPhone.
AirDrop gets new feature in China
There are several countries where the iPhone has specific features. In Japan, for example, it is mandatory that you hear a camera sound when you take a photo. And American iPhones can use the faster Ultra Wideband.
There is also something special going on with Chinese iPhones, because the Taiwanese flag emoji is not available there. But Apple is now going to adjust even more things with Chinese iPhones. For example, AirDrop now gets the feature to share files with everyone for just 10 minutes.

This function will replace the ‘Everyone’ option. It is then no longer possible to make AirDrop always detectable. The ‘Receive from’ and ‘Contacts only’ options will still be available. It is likely that Apple modified this feature as AirDrop was used in China to forward posters and images against President Xi JinPing and the Chinese government.
The new feature is in any case in iOS 16.1.1 and the beta of iOS 16.2. It is also striking that at the moment the function is really only available on Chinese iPhones and it is not just a software solution.
According to Bloomberg, Apple does have plans to make China’s AirDrop feature available worldwide next year. But then we hope that the function will be available next to the three current options. So you can choose from:
- Received from;
- Only contacts;
- Everybody;
- Everyone for 10 minutes.
