‘AirTag 2 will come in 2025 with much better tracking’

Apple will release a new version of the AirTag next year. The tracking in particular is better with the AirTag 2. But will anything else change?

AirTag 2 will be available in 2025 with much better tracking

Mark Gurman provided more information about the successor to the AirTag in his most recent newsletter. According to the usually reliable Apple expert, the next generation of the tracker will be released next year (in 2025). The first AirTag (€ 33.95) appeared in April 2021.

According to Gurman, one of the most important areas for improvement of the AirTag 2 is improved tracking (with the precise search function). The next AirTag uses the second generation of the Ultra Wideband chip for this purpose. According to rumors, this chip has about three times the range of the current AirTag.

The chip in the current AirTag has a range of 1 to about 50 meters when searching accurately according to the specifications. But in practice this is often much less and you are already at the limit after 20 meters. If there are walls in between, the range is often even less. That’s why it would be nice if this gets a lot better in the next generation.

The precise search function in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 has an actual range of about 60 meters. This could mean that the AirTag will have approximately the same range.

More changes with the AirTag second generation

According to Gurman, Apple will also tinker with the speaker of the AirTag 2. The rumors say that the speaker will become more difficult to remove. This is done to make stalking with AirTags difficult. With the current generation, the speaker is removed so that it can be better used to follow someone.
