The advantages of AirTags are obvious, but is it also advisable to attach one to your dog or cat?
AirTag for dog or cat
There are now all kinds of collars for sale in which you can put an AirTag. This implies that there is a demand for it and that there are many people who think it is a good idea to provide their dog or cat with an AirTag.
That is quite understandable. But it is also good to know exactly how an AirTag works. An AirTag is not equipped with GPS, but uses other Apple devices in the vicinity to determine the location. So there must be an updated iPhone, iPad or Mac nearby, otherwise it won’t work.
Benefits of an AirTag for Pets
An AirTag in your dog’s collar will therefore work well in many places in the Netherlands. There are therefore more than enough examples of positive experiences. For example, the fire brigade in America recently managed to save the life of a dog thanks to the AirTag that the animal was wearing.
Disadvantages of an AirTag for dog or cat
One drawback that we have already mentioned is that an AirTag does not necessarily always work everywhere. If your dog has run so far that he’s in some kind of no man’s land, you can forget about it. But there is an even more important drawback.
It appears to be relatively common for dogs to eat AirTags. For example, Colin Mortimer recently had his dog Sassy’s AirTag play a sound because it was no longer in the collar. To his surprise, the sound came from the stomach of his four-legged friend.
Advice from Apple
Apple has repeatedly stated that AirTags are for stuff, not pets. Presumably, Apple does not want to be responsible for possible accidents, because if things go wrong, the consequences can be major. There is a battery in an AirTag and that is obviously not a healthy snack for a dog.
That does not alter the fact that it is useful to attach an AirTag to your pet. If you want to try it out, make sure the AirTag is fully integrated into the collar, as with the Vulpes collar. In that case the risks are manageable. It goes especially wrong when the AirTag dangles from the collar like a tag and can catch on something, or be bitten off by another dog.
