Apple is addressing a security issue with a major update for AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, Powerbeats Pro, and Beats Fit Pro. This is how you install it!

All AirPods are receiving an important update

Release notes for AirPods firmware usually contain few details about changes included, but this time Apple has released a separate support document published. It describes a security issue that has been resolved in a major update for AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, Powerbeats Pro, and Beats Fit Pro.

The vulnerability could allow an attacker within Bluetooth range to spoof the credentials of a device your AirPods were previously connected to. The attacker was thus able to gain access to your AirPods, but the important update that Apple has now released solves the problem.

Quick installation is important

Apple generally mentions in support documents whether a security vulnerability has already been exploited, but this time it has omitted that. Still, it’s a good idea to install the important update for your AirPods as soon as possible. Now that the existence of the problem is known, the chance of exploiting the bug only increases.

Apple doesn’t provide instructions on how to install a major update for your AirPods. The firmware will install automatically while the AirPods are connected to an iOS device. Putting the AirPods or Beats in the case, connecting them to a power source, and then connecting the AirPods or Beats to an iPhone or Mac will force the update.

The second generation AirPods Pro models, the PowerBeats Pro and the Beats Fit Pro will receive firmware version 6F8, the other models firmware version 6A326. Do you want to know if your AirPods have already been updated to the important update? You can check the firmware of your AirPods by following these steps:

  1. Connect your AirPods to your iOS device;

  2. Open the Settings app;

  3. Tap ‘Info’;

  4. Tap ‘AirPods’;

  5. Look at the number next to ‘Firmware Version’.
