All iPhone 16 models are rumored to get a new A18 chip and it’s very important for the phones’ new features. Here’s why.
iPhone 16 is coming
Apple is currently working hard on the iPhone 16, which will be presented in September. The ‘normal’ iPhones will get a number of functions from the iPhone 15 Pro this year, such as the action button coming to the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus. According to new rumors, that is not the only change, because all iPhones will get a new chip this year. The iPhone 16 series runs on the A18 chip.

That would be the first time in years that Apple does not differentiate between the regular iPhones and the Pro models when it comes to the processor. For example, the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) got the A17 Pro chip last year, while the iPhone 15 (Plus) had to make do with the A16 Bionic chip. With the iPhone 16, all models run on the same A18 chip. It is more important than in previous years that all iPhones get a new processor, because many new AI functions are coming to the devices.
Support for Apple Intelligence
At WWDC 2024, Apple Intelligence was unveiled, Apple’s new technology that works with artificial intelligence. Almost all Apple apps are expanded with Apple Intelligence, so you get a writing assistant and Siri becomes much smarter. All these new AI functions require a lot of computing power, which makes it important that the new iPhones run on a powerful chip. With the A18 chip, that is no longer a problem with the iPhone 16.
This is not the case with the iPhone 15 (Plus), because the A16 Bionic chip does not support Apple Intelligence. The new technology only comes to iPhones that run on the A17 Pro chip, which are the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Thanks to the new A18 chip, it is almost certain that Apple Intelligence will come to all iPhone 16 models. According to rumors, Apple has even set up a special part of the processor for the new AI functions.
Release iPhone 16
Good news if you don’t want to pay top dollar for the new iPhone, because you won’t need a Pro model to use Apple Intelligence. The new technology will come to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 18. Apple will release iOS 18 in September, when the iPhone 16 with A18 chip will also be released. It is expected that four iPhones will be announced again.

Apple usually unveils the new iPhones in early September, usually on a Monday or Tuesday. If we look very far ahead, that would be Monday September 9 or Tuesday September 10, 2024.
