Alpine confirms: ‘Working on sporty R5’

Alpine confirms: ‘Working on sporty R5’

It was almost certain, but in conversation with Auto Express Alpine now confirms that the electric hatchback planned to be an Alpine version of the retro Renault 5.

Alpine is preparing for an all-electric future. That new chapter starts with three new models, which will appear in a few years. As we understood last week, this includes the GT X-Over planned for 2025 and the new (then electric) A110, which will appear a year later. Up to now, Alpine has been even more discreet about the third model, a compact hatchback. The above teaser photo, however, already hinted that it is an Alpine version of the new Renault 5. That’s opposite now Auto Express confirmed by Gilles le Borgne, one of Alpine’s chief engineers.

Although that doesn’t really come as a surprise anymore, it is so nice that Le Borgne also immediately wants to let go of the drivetrain. The ‘Alpine R5’ gets one electric motor in the nose of the car, good for a power of 218 hp. That power source probably also drives the front wheels, just like with the Renault 5 Alpine of yesteryear. It will undoubtedly be the most powerful trim of the retro Renault 5. The Frenchman also wants to say that the Alpine will have a wider track than the regular version. The Renault 5 will arrive in 2024, so we are cautiously hoping that we will also be presented with the Alpine R5 that year. At least something to look forward to, right?
