Amazon Prime Video: the best movies and series

Now that Amazon is officially present in our country, it seems that the streaming service of the store platform is also receiving more attention. Amazon Prime Video may feel like something you only get for free with your Prime subscription, but it is definitely a major streaming service. This is what these best series and films on Amazon Prime Video show.

Since Amazon.nl is now officially a fact in the Netherlands and everyone should stay indoors as much as possible in the near future, we have the best series and films on Amazon Prime Video lined up for you.

Undone

When you think of an animated series, you might think of a children’s series or a BoJack Horseman-like copy, but Undone is really animation of a completely different order. Rotoscope animation (in which the movements of actors are built up frame by frame) records the story of a young woman who has not fallen on her mouth. Undone alone is worth a look through the art of, among others, the Dutchman Hisko Hulsing, but the emotional story, the convincing dialogues and the good structure make this one of the gems of Amazon Prime Video. Funny detail: the makers of BoJack Horseman made Undone.

Us

After getting out of business Get Out, director Jordan Peele had the hard task of making another movie that was so successful or even surpassed. He had to succeed with an Oscar winner like Lupito Nyong’o. Although Us was not well understood everywhere, the horror film is certainly one that will remain in the subconscious for a long time. Peele’s criticism of American culture is considerably less subtle than in Get Out, but there are still many layers and winks to be discovered in this film after seeing him several times.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan

The author Tom Clancy was deeply committed to the US secret service. Call it involvement, call it an obsession, but Clancy knew what he was talking about when it came to the CIA. He knew how to successfully use that world as the background to his exciting espionage stories. Stories that we have often experienced in games and movies, but now also in a large-scale TV series. John Krasinski (The Office) plays the CIA employee Jack Ryan who goes on a terrorist hunt. This man, who we actually know from an iconic comedy, does this very well.

The LEGO Movie

Especially now that many people have the children at home during this period, it is now and then looking for something that is fun for the whole family. The LEGO Movie is a great example of an animated movie that has fully understood that. On the one hand, it has fun underpants and a very catchy song that your kids will sing for the rest of the quarantine, on the other hand there are many jokes and ambiguities that only adults get with them. You get all this in a LEGO style, which is of course very suitable for young and old.

The Expanse

If you like other worlds with stories that will completely thrill you, The Expanse is probably for you. This series shows a potential future of the world. Or at least, more than that: the writer James S.A. In The Expanse books, Corey has made stories about how humans live in other places in space hundreds of years from now. The cast is not filled with famous people, but is extremely diverse and very talented. Finally something different on the retina than the usual suspects.

The Hangover

This teenage comedy has become a cult classic and a much-worn “costume” during Carnival. The men of The Hangover wake up after a big party in Las Vegas and have to remember their nightly escapes. And there are quite a few, because someone misses a tiger, someone has a baby and there is also a tiger in the suite. An award-winning film, thanks in part to the boyish Zach Galifiniakis and the always convincing Bradley Cooper.

Transparent

Transparent is not only about being honest and “transparent”, it is about being a parent in transition. Jeffrey Tambor in the series plays a man who feels more woman. If he decides to go through life like this, he has to ask with his family and environment. What is special is that it is not only cute and humorous, because this series does not hesitate to also include painful and heavy emotions. A wonderful series to binge, because it has been shown for five seasons.

Green Book

Perhaps the best movie of 2018: Green Book. Although you may not be able to identify directly with a jazz musician from the deep south of America, the film does everything it can to ensure that it does. You can empathize with this man and his driver, thanks in part to the excellent acting of Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen. A movie that will make you disgust, laugh and cry, all in one.

The Man in the High Castle

The great thing about movies and series is that it doesn’t have to be reality. In this way you can visualize an alternative reality and the choices people would make in it. If you find that interesting, check out The Man in the High Castle. In this series you see that World War II was won by the Germans and that America is split in two: one half for Japan, one half for Germany. That this does not always go well together and that people sometimes arise who have different ideas, that becomes clear in this series based on the book by Phillip K. Dick.

Hotel Mumbai

Hotel Mumbai is a film that will keep you moving closer to the edge of your seat. This true-to-life thriller shows a group of tourists and associates trying to keep alive at Hotel Mumbai after a number of terrorists have holed up at the hotel. Ruthless men force the city of Mumbai to fall to its knees in this film. In a very exciting story of something that unfortunately really happened, you experience the story from a different side.

Fleabag

If you prefer something more airy, Fleabag is a good Amazon Prime Video Original. A young lady in London lives a modern lifestyle that not everyone understands, including herself. Actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge not only plays the lead role, she is also practically the person in charge of the series’ production. She is both doing great, because the comedy Fleabag feels like a breath of fresh air. Waller-Bridge dares to play out the most uncomfortable scenarios and more than once breaks through the well-known “fourth” wall, so that it appeals to you directly.

Booksmart

Booksmart is a hilarious tale of two BFFs who are actually too nerdy for their own good. And they know it. That’s why they go crazy one more night, but without it really being within their control, their evening plan changes more and more. Until she hangs their friendship on a thread. However, the two ladies are so charming and funny that it has long been clear that the argument between the two does not last. Booksmart is a real teen movie, but one that you can still appreciate long after being a teenager.

Modern Love

If you like Netflix series Easy, then Modern Love will suit you well. Here too, we follow a different person in his or her love life every episode. One couple has been married for centuries and does not know if that is the right way, while elsewhere a young lady has one date after another and does not know if she has any chance of getting married at all. Modern Love all tells short stories about love in New York, based on a love column from The New York Times.

Fight Club

It’s a classic, this movie starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. It is bursting with wisdoms of life that are still very applicable in 2020, although the film is starting to become somewhat dated in appearance. Fight Club sounds like a very violent film that is all about fighting, but in the end it is about something completely different that is much larger than a group of men who want to beat each other up. Although, of course you don’t have that from us.

The Boys

At least as raw and dark as Fight Club, that’s The Boys. This series about superheroes that are used as marketing mascots makes superheroes a kind of product. Superheroes who may not be worth that title either, because they may have special gifts: the superhero mentality is often hard to find. The Boys comes with a starring role for Karl Urban and a very nice career move for many of the young superheroes in the series. Not for delicate souls, but a superhero story that finally does things a little differently.
