ANWB: ‘Working from home resulted in 63 percent less traffic jams’

The length and duration of traffic jams in the Netherlands decreased by 63 percent this year, the ANWB concludes on Wednesday based on annual traffic jams. Thanks to working from home, the Dutch roads were a lot quieter. In the summer it was busier than last year.

The number of traffic jams has grown rapidly in recent years and the number of traffic jams also increased significantly in the first two months of 2020, by about 20 percent. When the cabinet called on 15 March to work from home as much as possible, this suddenly came to an end. That call was immediately reflected in the traffic jam figures and it remained that way for the rest of the year. The often daily traffic jams at notorious bottlenecks have disappeared.

In the summer, however, there was a revival of the crowds again. The nice weather caused more traffic jams during the day in the spring and in the summer. During the summer holidays it was even busier during the day than last year. According to the ANWB, this is partly because the Dutch spent their holidays in their own country.

Record striker before the lockdown

The ANWB recorded a record evening rush hour of 951 kilometers on Tuesday 28 January. The Afsluitdijk, where there is work, leads the top ten of traffic jams this year. In second place is the N3 at Dordrecht. The A27 between Lexmond and Werkendam is in third place. Incidentally, the traffic jams that caused the most delays were in other places. Based on data from Flitsmeister, a top 10 already rolled out earlier this week.
