Apple in talks with OpenAI – will Siri be replaced by ChatGPT?

Apple has reportedly resumed talks with OpenAI, meaning Siri may make way for ChatGPT in iOS 18. How exactly does that work?

This year, iOS 18 will come to your iPhone, with new AI functions expected. With the major iPhone update, Apple is catching up in the field of artificial intelligence, adding useful functions to apps such as Photos, Apple Music and Messages. Siri is also becoming a lot smarter, because Apple’s voice assistant may use new and more extensive language models from existing chatbots such as ChatGPT.

Apple is negotiating with various companies for these language models, including Google and OpenAI. Apple is said to be in discussions with Google to use Gemini in iOS 18, while negotiations are underway with OpenAI about the integration of ChatGPT. This reportedly means bad news for Apple’s voice assistant, as Siri may be completely replaced by ChatGPT.

Siri or ChatGPT

Apple is currently in discussions with Google and OpenAI to bring generative AI to iOS 18 and Siri. According to the usually reliable Apple expert Mark Gurman, these conversations would be about the technology needed to set up a chatbot. If an agreement is reached between OpenAI and Apple, there is a chance that Siri will have to make way for a completely new chatbot.

Siri’s successor could then be based on ChatGPT, which Apple most likely presents under a different name. A second option is of course also possible. In that case, Apple’s voice assistant will continue to exist and Apple will launch the new chatbot alongside Siri. In any case, it is certain that major changes are coming for Siri, which may mean the end of the voice assistant.

This is when iOS 18 will be released

ChatGPT’s end of Siri may sound like bad news, but for most users the opposite is true. Apple’s voice assistant is now outdated, making it high time for an update. By introducing a completely new chatbot, Apple is no longer behind the times. This allows the company to compete with companies such as Microsoft in the field of artificial intelligence.

It is by no means certain that Apple will opt for OpenAI. According to rumors, Apple is looking for the deal with the lowest price, making it more likely that the choice will fall to Google. In that case, Gemini would come to iOS 18, because ChatGPT is not part of Google. We don’t have to wait long for the new features, because iOS 18 will be presented in June. A few months later, the update will be available to everyone. Read all about iOS 18 here!
