This year iOS 19 is the most important update for the iPhone, in which Apple is said to be incorporated many transparent frameworks. These frameworks look made of glass and we already see in Visionos, the operating system for the Apple Vision Pro. Now it appears that Apple not only works on glass elements for iOS, but also on an iPhone that is completely made of glass. That’s not all, because the company also works on a glass Apple Watch and Mac.
Apple explained in a new patent what a glass iPhone, Apple Watch and Mac would look like. The images show that the iPhone is made completely made of glass. Both the front and back consists of glass, giving you a transparent housing. The iPhone therefore no longer has buttons, instead, Apple introduces digital buttons on the side of the device.

Operating the glass iPhone is going in a new interactive way according to the patent. Apple describes touch and pressure-sensitive areas, in the places where the buttons are still on the current iPhones. It is striking that these areas change places when the iPhone is tilted. That is handy, because that way the buttons turn along if you keep the iPhone horizontally (or again vertically).
The sides of the iPhone are also made of glass, so the buttons have no fixed place. The also applies to the back, the glass iPhone can, according to this patent, display a screen on both the front and back. That way you can also run the iPhone so that you use the display on the back. In addition, it is possible to press the sides of the phone at the same time, for example to adjust the volume or to go to the next number.
Glass Apple Watch and Mac
In addition to the glass iPhone, Apple has also applied for patents for an Apple Watch and Mac of glass. At the Apple Watch, the entire glass housing is made. The operation is still going through the touchscreen, but for a larger part with hand gestures. With the Glass Mac, the sides are manufactured from transparent glass, it is not known which new functions Apple brings to the device.
That does not mean that a glass iPhone, Apple Watch or Mac will appear soon. The company regularly applies for new patents, which gives us an idea of ​​the projects that Apple is working on in the background. There is a good chance that Apple will only release a fully glass device in a few years, or that it will not appear at all. The Apple Car was never released after many patents. For now it is in any case interesting to know which innovations Apple is working on.
