Apple has rolled out an update to Apple Maps on the web, adding a useful feature to the service. This is changing!
Apple Maps on the web
In 2024, Apple added many new features to Maps with several updates. Cycling routes finally became available in the Netherlands and Belgium, so you no longer have to use another navigation app. You did need Apple’s Maps app for this, but that is no longer the case since this summer. Apple released an internet version of Maps, so that you can consult the service on any browser.
For the time being, this is a test version of Apple Maps on the internet, which means that a number of components are not (yet) available. Apple has now added a feature to the web version of Maps that we already know from the app on the iPhone, iPad and Mac. After the latest update of Apple Maps, it is finally possible to look around certain locations. ‘Look Around’ was previously not available with Apple Maps on the web.
Looking around Maps
The ‘Look Around’ function allows you – as the name suggests – to look around different locations on the map. The feature is not yet available in all places, but in the Netherlands and Belgium you can look around in most locations. You’ll find ‘Look Around’ in Apple Maps on the web in the left corner, where the binoculars icon will appear automatically after the latest update. Can’t see the binoculars? Then zoom in a little further on the map.
The latest update for the web version of Apple Maps is especially good news for users without an Apple device. ‘Look around’ can now also be used on, for example, a Windows or Android device. Looking around is possible in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, the European Union and several other countries. In the United States this concerns a limited number of cities. See here where the function is already available.
More about Apple Maps
Apple regularly releases updates for the internet version of Apple Maps. To use the latest feature you do not need to install any software, the web page will be updated automatically. Do you regularly use Apple Maps on the internet? Then you can now view your holiday destination, favorite place or your own home with ‘Look around’ in Maps. Apple is expected to expand the web version of Maps with even more features next year.
For example, the 3D view is not yet available with Apple Maps on the internet and you cannot yet log in with your Apple ID. These features will probably also come to the web version of Apple Maps next year, so that the service becomes increasingly complete. Earlier this year, Apple already brought many new features to the Maps app. Curious about what changes Apple made with iOS 18? Then read all about Maps in iOS 18 here!
