Apple announces tvOS 18
Apple announced a series of major software updates at WWDC 2024, including iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. The Apple TV is not lagging behind and will receive tvOS 18 this year. This is a minor update for the Apple TV, but there is still a number of useful features in the new generation of tvOS. According to Apple, these new features provide a better viewing experience for series and films.

Do you regularly recognize an actor or actress, but can’t remember the name? tvOS 18 offers a solution for this, because in the new software version you can request useful information about actors, characters and music in Apple TV Plus. The new feature is called InSight and displays background information for episodes and films. For example, you can directly add a song from a specific scene to your library in Apple Music, or see which other films and series an actor or actress has played in.
Enhance Dialogs comes to Apple TV
In tvOS 18, the ‘Improve Dialogs’ feature gets a lot better with the help of machine learning. This feature was already available when you connected a HomePod (mini) to the Apple TV, but is now also coming to tvOS itself. With ‘Improve dialogues’, as the name suggests, speech is brought more to the fore in films or series. This makes conversations more intelligible and easier to follow.
The function is especially useful for films or series with loud background sounds. ‘Enhance dialogues’ ensures that these sounds do not dominate. Do you prefer subtitles when watching your favorite series? This has also been improved in tvOS 18, because subtitles always appear at the right time if the language in a film or series does not match the language of the Apple TV. So you no longer have to worry about subtitles that are a few seconds ahead or behind the images.
tvOS 18 release date
With tvOS 18 it is much easier to follow films and series with a lot of music, action and other background sounds. The Apple TV will also receive new screensavers. The update comes to the Apple TV 4K (all generations) and the Apple TV HD (2015). These are all generations that now also support tvOS 17, so no models are lost with the new tvOS version. Apple has now released the first test version of tvOS 18 for developers.
