Apple Watch Series 10 is getting new features (but they’re already delayed)

This year marks the release of the tenth generation of the Apple Watch and some big changes are expected. These features are coming to the Apple Watch Series 10!

Apple is celebrating an anniversary this year, as it has been ten years since the first generation of the Apple Watch was announced. As a result, major changes are expected to come to the smartwatch in 2024, similar to the redesign Apple implemented with the tenth generation of the iPhone. According to rumors, the Apple Watch Series 10 will get a number of major new features to celebrate the anniversary.

It was already clear that the Apple Watch Series 10 (also called Apple Watch X) will get a larger screen. With the current Apple Watch, you can choose between a 40 or 44 millimeter display. The next generation will get 45 and 49 millimeter screens, making the watch the same size as the Apple Watch Ultra. However, Apple is now running into production problems, which have delayed several functions in the Apple Watch Series 10.

Health features will appear later

The Apple Watch Series 10 will likely come powered by the new S10 chip, a more powerful processor that’s also found in the Apple Watch Ultra 3. It’s supposedly faster and more power-efficient than the S9 chip, but that’s not the only change under the hood. The Apple Watch Series 10 will also get new features for measuring blood pressure and detecting sleep apnea.

According to new rumors, the technology that Apple uses for these health functions is not yet reliable enough. As a result, the new functions will probably only appear later on the Apple Watch Series 10. For example, you will not see precise numbers for blood pressure for the time being, but only an increase or decrease in the measurements. Measuring your body temperature currently works the same with the Apple Watch.

Apple is also having trouble detecting sleep apnea, because this feature works with the oxygen meter on the Apple Watch Series 10. In the United States, Apple is currently not allowed to use the saturation meter, due to an ongoing patent case with the medical company Masimo. The feature is disabled in the United States on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. It is therefore unlikely that Apple will have fixed this problem when the Apple Watch Series 10 is released.

The blood pressure monitor is expected to be available on the Apple Watch Series 10 at a later date. There is a chance that it will be possible to enable sleep apnea detection in Europe, as this is a US patent case. Apple is allowed to use the saturation meter in Europe, which means that the function to detect sleep apnea on the Apple Watch Series 10 can be enabled here without any problems.
