Apple’s MagSafe has revolutionized the convenience of wireless charging. It’s so good, you’ll soon even find MagSafe on Android phones under the name Qi2.
New Qi standard simply becomes MagSafe
The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced that the next generation of the Qi charging standard will use MagSafe. Qi2 is the new general wireless charging standard and thus builds on Apple’s MagSafe charging technology.
There is a ‘Magnetic Power Profile’. That means devices that are Qi2 compatible will use MagSafe magnets in the future. These are available in all iPhones since the 12.
Qi2 becomes MagSafe for Android
According to the WPC, the Magnetic Power Profile in Qi2 should ensure that smartphones and other mobile products with a battery are perfectly matched to the chargers. It also aims to improve energy efficiency and speed up charging.
Consumers and retailers have reported to us that they are confused about which devices are Qi certified and which claim to work with Qi but are not Qi certified. This confusion can lead to a bad user experience and even security issues. Our standard gives consumers confidence that their devices are safe, efficient and compatible with other brands. Qi2 will become the global standard for wireless charging and provide consumers and retailers with that assurance.

Also enables new devices
Qi2 is also expected to enable new devices that cannot be charged with existing flat panel chargers. Some devices will be able to charge faster, and the updated standard will also “pave the way for even faster wireless charging,” the consortium said.
The Qi2 standard will be introduced before the end of 2023 and will replace the current Qi standard. Qi2 smartphones and chargers are expected to be available from mid-2023.
Improving wireless charging
The adoption of the Qi2 standard is an important step in improving wireless charging capabilities and creating a unified platform for all devices. It remains to be seen how quickly the new standard will catch on and what impact it will have on the smartphone and accessory market.
