Aprilia has taken the Shiver 900 back into production. However, not in her Italian factory in Noale, but in China at the Zongshen Piaggio Foshan Joint Venture, purely and only for the Chinese market.
When Aprilia had already launched the Shiver 900 as a successor of Shiver 750, we were convinced that this was a keeper, that the Italians had thrown the bat in the Hoenderhok in 2007. With a strong block, “Fan Luck Thing, even in the city, for a super sharp price” was our judgment in 2017Good steering characteristics, extensive electronics and a razor -sharp price of less than ten thousand euros, the Shiver 900 was a very attractive bike.
However, the Shiver 900 story was short -lived. The 896cc V-twin, which was good for a top capacity of 95 hp (indeed, to be replaced on 35 kW for the A2 driving license), was developed for the then current Euro 4 Emissi standards and Aprilia strangely did not bother the effort To upgrade the block to Euro 5, so that, to everyone’s surprise (and especially ours), the canvas for the Shiver 900 (as well as the Dorsoduro 900) already fell in 2021.
Now it almost never happens that the production of a model taken out of production is restarted, but the Shiver 900 seems to be the proverbial exception to that rule. The first rumors The Shiver 900 would be taken back into production Storsmen from 2023, when design registrations were done by Zongshen-Piaggio for two models with 900 V-twin: one design Shiver 900 and the other GLR900 as a potential Gilera model.
The two designs were the first result of the joint venture that had entered into Aprilia’s parent company Piaggio and Zongshen in January 2022. Even before that joint venture had songshen on a motor show at the end of 2021 a concept model based on the Shiver 900 called the Cyclone RA9, as well as a Gilera labeled V-twin. Later, Aprilia Shiver-based prototypes were spotted under the brand name Gilera.
The Shiver 900 now launched in China is a mix of the two designs that were submitted in 2023 and is largely identical to the Shiver 900 as has been available in the rest of the world. On the eye is the only difference in the side panels at the height of the tank, which the radiator extracts from the side from the side. Furthermore, the engine has received a keyless contact, with a ‘smart start button’ as a replacement for the ignition lock.
By the way, if you think that Piaggio has moved production to China because it is so nice and cheap there: for the Shiver 900 you have to put 68,800 on the table in China and that is around € 9,000 in the current course of the Chinese Yuan . For Chinese standards that is quite the price, when you consider that a CFMoto 800NK only costs ¥ 44,980, around € 5,900.
For the time being, the Shiver 900 is only intended for the Chinese market, but it would not surprise us if a European version started to follow in the foreseeable future.
