Autofill passwords on iPhone/iPad

Log in to websites and apps on the iPhone and iPad even faster and easier.

The AutoFill feature on the iPhone and iPad automatically fills in usernames and passwords. The feature works in conjunction with the iCloud Keychain and/or other password managers.

Due to the collaboration, it is no longer necessary to copy and paste passwords from such a password manager, but filling them in automatically. This applies to websites via the Safari app as well as to other apps installed on the iPhone/iPad. Verification codes that you receive via SMS are also automatically filled in. It is no longer necessary to first open the message and copy the code from there.

To use AutoFill you must also use a password manager. That is a program that stores passwords. The iCloud Keychain password manager is available by default on iPhone and iPad. In the article ‘Using iCloud Keychain‘ we explain what it is exactly and how to set it up. It is of course also possible to use a different password manager.

If you are using a password manager, you will still need to enable the AutoFill feature.

  • Tap on Institutions.
  • Tap on Passwords or Passwords and Accounts.
  • Make sure the slider behind ‘Fill in automatically’ is green. Isn’t this the case? Then tap it.

The AutoFill feature is now enabled. In the future, the login details will be filled in automatically. That works like this:

  • Go to the website you want to log in to via Safari or open the desired app.
  • If necessary, tap the input field for the username or password.
  • A suggestion for the login details appears at the bottom of the screen. Click on this blue button.
  • Is the suggestion incorrect? Then tap the key icon. Then tap on the correct account.
