We saw the first augmented reality glasses in 2013, the Google Glass. Those glasses never reached the general public, but OPPO is going to make another attempt. Our AW Poll is about the augmented reality glasses for the general public, and that’s you.
What is an augmented reality?
Augmented Reality stands for Augmented Reality. This technique adds a layer over reality. You can think of navigation, such as the augmented reality walking navigation in Google Maps. Google uses the smartphone camera for ‘reality’ and different arrows and Maps markers are used for the virtual objects. Together, this makes augmented reality navigation possible while walking.
Another good example is the way in which Google can place different animals and objects in our living room. Fans of American pick-ups can indulge in this clever piece of augmented reality where you can view the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning from all sides. Indeed also in your living room or wherever you are.
In addition to the smartphone, glasses can also be used to display virtual information while looking around in reality. OPPO announced its OPPO Air Glass today and it should serve a wide audience. These AR glasses show navigation directions like a heads-up display, and can also translate for you in real time so you can have a conversation with anyone in the world. Even if you don’t know the language. OPPO would like to see everyone, glasses-wearing or not, put on the OPPO Air Glass, and China will get the scoop.
More manufacturers are working on such augmented reality glasses. Think of the Smart Glasses from Xiaomi, the Ray Ban from Meta, the Samsung would also work on such glasses. And this morning it was announced that Google would also be working on a new augmented reality (AR) headset. So it seems that the manufacturer is going to make a new attempt to bring the augmented reality glasses or headset to the general public. Apparently we weren’t ready in 2013, but are we now?
