The Volkswagen Group is considering splitting Bugatti. Rumors about this have been around for some time, but according to Porsche’s CEO, there will probably be clarity sometime in the coming months.
Volkswagen is reviewing its brand portfolio. The role of Bugatti within the concern has been particularly questioned, as it turned out six months ago. Then the Croatian Rimac was already mentioned as a potential buyer of the brand. There still appear to be conversations with Rimac about Bugatti. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume late Automobilwoche know that that company still has a good chance of gaining control of the French brand in one way or another. “There are currently in-depth discussions on how Bugatti can continue as well as possible. Rimac can play a role in this, because those brands are technically well-suited.”
Whether an actual takeover of Bugatti by Rimac is on the table is not entirely clear. According to Blume, ‘different scenarios’ are possible. One of these would really be the sale of Bugatti, while Porsche would get a larger share in Rimac. Porsche currently has a share of more than 15 percent. “I think the group will make a decision about this this six months,” said Blume.

Rimac focuses on the development of electric hypercars. If Bugatti does indeed come under Rimac’s responsibility, that will undoubtedly be Bugatti’s future too. Then the exorbitantly large combustion engines it now uses would give way to electric powertrains.
