Camera as a mirror in iOS 14

Camera as a mirror in iOS 14

The camera in iOS 14 has undergone some improvements. For example, you can switch the app to mirroring mode.

There is a group of people who love to take selfies in all conceivable circumstances. And part of that group thinks it feels unnatural when their live preview is not shown in mirror image. Some nonsense, of course, because a camera simply does not produce a mirror image. But in order to meet the need of the army of ‘selfieists’, Apple has added a mirror image display to the camera in iOS 14. Launch the app and switch to Selfie mode (either press the camera selector button). You can see that the mirror view is activated by default. If you prefer to return to the normal non-mirrored view, start the app Settings. Tap in it Camera and put the switch behind Mirror front camera from.

Oops, a bug?

And with that we immediately ran into a somewhat hidden bug in iOS 14. That switch is already off! Switching on and off again does not help either: the preview continues to be displayed in mirror image. After some thought, the switch turns out to have another function: by turning it on, the selfie taken is actually saved in mirror image. Turning off produces an anti-reflective photo. Unfortunately, the preview can now only be viewed in mirror image.

One of the crazy things that you as a user of iOS 14 (iPadOS 14 has the same problem by the way) have to learn to live with it. By the way: if you are still in that app Settings … By the switch at the back Use ‘Volume Up’ for burst on, you can use the volume up button to shoot a quick series of photos. Normally – with this option disabled – a video recording will start when you hold down that button longer in photo mode.

These switches are new in iOS 14.
