Car sales down 30 percent in March

The number of registrations of new passenger cars in the first three weeks of March was about 30 percent lower than in the same period a year earlier, the ING Economic Bureau has calculated. The cause behind this is of course easy to guess.

The decrease is reflected in an overview published on Monday, based on figures from Kentekenradar, the RDW and the ING Economic Bureau itself. Economist Rico Luman points to lower consumer confidence and buyers who stay home because of the corona virus as causes.

“The number of registrations of new cars fell by about 30 percent in the first three weeks of March, ahead of actual new orders. Sales of new (lease) cars to companies – which in the Netherlands reach about two thirds of the total – still provide some stability in the short term, “Luman said in an explanation LinkedIn. BOVAG previously noted that the buyer public is ignoring the car dealer. The Tesla Model 3 is at the top of the sales list with 1,017 registered copies, followed by the Kia Niro and Renault Clio. The MINI and the Volkswagen Golf complete the top five, according to Kentekenradar data.

Registrations until March 22

  • Tesla Model 3: 1.017
  • Kia Niro: 573 (290 of which are fully electric)
  • Renault Clio: 522
  • MINI: 447 (172 of which are fully electric)
  • Volkswagen Golf: 441 (of which 293 fully electric)
