Charging iPhone correctly: you should definitely not do this

To properly charge your iPhone, you need to keep a few things in mind. In any case, you should not do these three things!

Charging iPhone correctly: you should not do this

Your iPhone’s battery deteriorates over time. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about that. But by properly charging your iPhone, you can use the battery a lot longer. Your iPhone’s battery usually has a lifespan of between three and five years (or about 500 to 1000 charging cycles).

There are also a number of things that you should not do. These shorten the life of your iPhone battery considerably. There are three factors that affect the health of your iPhone battery:

  • Number of charge cycles;
  • Heat;
  • Age.

1. This is when you should not charge iPhone

Is the battery charge of your iPhone still above 90 percent? Then it is better not to quickly pull your iPhone to 100 percent before you leave home. As a rule of thumb, you can keep the battery level of your iPhone between 30 and 90 percent.

Also, don’t let your iPhone drain too much. When you get the message that Energy Saving Mode will be activated when your iPhone battery falls below twenty percent, it is best to hang the iPhone on the charger.

For proper charging, it is better to charge your iPhone a little each time than once a day all the way. It is best to always keep your iPhone’s battery charge between 20 and 80 percent.

2. Don’t let your iPhone get too hot

Do you charge iPhone at night? Then don’t put it under your pillow (especially in the summer). The iPhone can then not dissipate the heat properly and that is disastrous for the life of the battery. Of course you shouldn’t put it in the sun or charge it tucked away in your pants with a power bank, for example.

It is better than to put it in a place with a pleasant temperature. The iPhone battery feels best between 20 and 30 degrees. Short heat outliers are not a problem, but prolonged heat is certainly not good.

3. Do not use fake cables or chargers

Always try to charge your iPhone with a genuine Apple cable. Some of the ‘fake’ cables don’t work properly or even give strange error messages when you connect them. There are even stories of iPhone adapters catching fire, with all kinds of nasty consequences.

Do use: optimized charging

Charging your iPhone properly is one thing, but to limit the aging process of your iPhone battery, the iPhone can learn your daily charging routine. The iPhone can thus extend the life of your battery. So make sure you have this option enabled. You check that in the following way.

Turn on optimized charging on iPhone

  1. Choose ‘Settings’;

  2. Go to ‘Battery > Battery health and charging’;

  3. Turn on the option under ‘Optimized charging’.
