Check in faster with express mode for public transit cards in Apple Wallet

Express mode lets you use some cards and keys in Apple Wallet without waking or unlocking your device, or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

When you have set up an express card, the payment card will automatically be offered when the NFC chip is triggered by, for example, access gates at stations or public transport posts in buses. This allows you to check in even faster with OVpay.

Express Mode for Apple Wallet

Express Mode lets you use some cards in Apple Wallet automatically without waking or unlocking your device. You also don’t need to confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to use the card. This lets you quickly check in on public transportation with, for example, your payment card.

Set up Express public transport card

  • Open Settings on your iPhone
  • Navigate to Wallet and Apple Pay
  • Tap on ‘Express public transport card’
  • Select a desired payment or transport card
  • Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode

On your Apple Watch, you can optionally select a different transit or payment card to use in Express Transit mode. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app. On the ‘My Watch’ tab, tap ‘Wallet & Apple Pay’. Then tap ‘Express Transit Card’, select a transit or payment card and authenticate with your passcode on your Apple Watch.

Using Express Mode in Public Transport

If you then want to use your payment card in this way on public transport, all you have to do is hold your iPhone or Apple Watch against the check-in column in the designated place. The access gate or column will trigger the NFC chip in the device and thus activate the card. You will then be checked in automatically. Repeat this to check out.

More than public transport

You can also use Express Mode for purposes other than public transport, but unfortunately not many functions are supported in the Netherlands yet. Compatible cards and keys include:

  • Public transport cards or payment cards for travelling by public transport
  • Student cards
  • Hotel room and house keys
  • Car keys
  • Scooter keys
  • Other compatible cards
